Design Principles

Authentic over polished (PIRATE ethos)

Practical over theoretical (implementation focus)

Community over individual (peer accountability)

Immediate over delayed (concrete next steps)

Design Philosophy

Rather than creating decorative elements, every visual choice served the functional goal of making AI ethics implementation feel accessible, collaborative, and immediately actionable.

Hand-on Workshop Experience

We conducted our hands-on Open Ethics workshop at Odonien, Cologne's largest sociocultural venue in the independent arts scene.

Odonien is a unique environment where an open-air studio, nightclub, cultural center, event space, and workshop facility merge into one inspiring, industrial-artistic setting.

The venue features towering sculptural installations made from reclaimed industrial materials, creating an authentic "raw and real" atmosphere that perfectly embodied PIRATE Night's ethos. Participants gathered among artistic fire installations and metalwork sculptures, surrounded by the creative energy of Cologne's most innovative cultural space.

The combination of Odonien's inspiring industrial environment, tactile sticker materials, and structured question progression created psychological safety for participants to discuss ethics implementation challenges honestly—exactly the breakthrough conversations that drive real behavior change rather than surface-level awareness.

Post-Workshop Survey & Data Collection

Following the structured workshop experience, participants were invited to complete a digital survey via QR-code integration, achieving meaningful response rates that enabled quantitative validation of qualitative workshop observations.

What influences on AI & ethics decisions?

Regulatory compliance

requirements

Alignment with personal values

Customer trust and loyalty

Peers and competitors

What would make you immediately stop using an AI system in your personal life?

Clear Privacy violation or data misuse

Obviosly biased or discriminatory outputs

Feeling manupilated or emotionally expolited

Important decisions made without any explanation

Security breach

Key Learnings

The workshop-survey combination validated that the AI ethics implementation gap stems from structural barriers rather than awareness deficits. Physical interaction through tactile value stickers bypassed professional facades, enabling authentic conversations about implementation failures.

Community accountability partnerships (78% interest) proved more motivating than regulatory compliance for transparency adoption, suggesting network effects drive behavior change more effectively than top-down mandates.

The systematic progression from individual values discovery through peer dialogue to systematic transparency introduction created escalating psychological investment that culminated in concrete implementation commitments, demonstrating that abstract ethical principles can become actionable through thoughtful design thinking and community-centered approaches.
